Near the end of August, Ephesians 2:10 was my verse for the day: For we are God’s handiwork created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
I’d been thinking a lot about the change in seasons God said is coming in my life, so I wrote in my journal, “After reading this verse, my question to you was, ‘What good works do you have for me in the future since my writing season will be coming to an end?’”
Then I went on to read my devotional from The Upper Room which was titled, “Finish Today.” The writer of this devotional asked her six-year-old grandson what he would be doing in the next few days.
He said, “Grammie, I’m just going to finish today and then I’ll do tomorrow.”
The author said, “Sometimes I can run too far ahead in my planning. In doing so, I run the risk of missing today’s blessings and experiencing unnecessary anxiety.”
I could relate and I wrote, “Help me to focus on today, the things I still need to do in this season!”
A few days later, our Daily Bread devotional had this prayer, Dear God, please help me finish well what you’ve called me to do. Amen.
Even though my writing season, as we’ve known it, may be coming to a close, I need to focus on writing and preparing book talks for three events in the next 3 ½ weeks and continuing to write blogs as the Holy Spirit prompts me. After that, there will probably be at least three more book events, possibly before we leave for Tanzania in January to visit our sponsored children.
I don’t need the stress of trying to figure out what God wants me to do next. He has always been faithful to reveal His plan to me when the time is right.
Years ago I read a devotional about a woman who compared her efforts to peer into the future to a person trying to see around a large slow-moving truck traveling slowly up a steep hill. It was counter productive and interfered with her driving safely where she was right now–behind the truck!
I’ve never been good at waiting after the Lord has given me an inkling that something new is coming, that the present season is about to change. God is giving me another opportunity to get it right!
Heavenly Father, please help me to leave tomorrow in your hands and enable me to be like the little boy who told his grandma he was just going to finish today and then do tomorrow. Amen.
