A LITTLE CLAY POT

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us (II Corinthians 4:7 NIV).

Last summer God showed me clearly that He found His greatest pleasure in my willingness to be just a little clay pot that would not detract in any way from Jesus, the awesome treasure I carried within me. I was so impressed by the importance of this concept that I began to search for a plain clay pot to put on my windowsill to remind me of my purpose.

To my amazement, it seemed that every nondescript clay pot of the type that I wanted had a very large price tag on it—a higher price than I was willing to pay! As God continued to work in my life, I began to realize that there is also a very high cost involved in becoming just a little clay pot—denying self, embracing the cross, and promoting Christ rather than ourselves.

In theory, most Christians would acknowledge the desirability of being a nondescript clay pot, but when faced with the reality, many of us discover that the price is higher than we are willing to pay.

Forgive us, Father, when our desire for recognition and praise outweighs our desire to bring glory to you. Help us to remember that vessels of clay are the most appropriate containers for showing God’s glory. Amen.
