AS A MAN SPEAKS TO HIS FRIEND

The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend
(Exodus 33:11 NIV).
I sat quietly in my chair as the Retreat leader spoke words of personal prophecy for each of the women who had come. Then it was my turn. Eleanor stood in front of me quietly. After a moment of silence, she prayed a simple prayer and passed on to the next person. It had happened again. God had spoken to everyone else, and I had been left out. It was so hard to understand.
It wasn’t that God never spoke to me. He did, often, through the scriptures and in His still, small voice, giving me guidance and comfort; but in situations like this where God was speaking to people through another person, they never had a word for me.
As I walked back to my room, I whispered, “Lord, why won’t you speak to me as you do to others through those who have the gift of prophecy?”
God answered me tenderly, words that washed away all the rejection I’d been feeling, “With you, I speak face to face as a man speaks with his friend.”
How silly I had been to envy those who were receiving messages from God through other people, rather than being grateful for the loving, on-going communication I had with Him each day. What greater gift could God give us than to speak to us “face to face as a man speaks to his friend?”
Father, help us to delight in the times we spend in your presence and give us ears to hear the voice of your Spirit as you speak to us. Amen.

  1. I love this post Daisy. I think you’re absolutely right that God sees you as his friend, and his daughter.
