DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU’RE GOING?

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; …Do not be like the horse or the mule, which…must be controlled by bit and bridle (Psalm 32:8-9 NIV).

Several months ago, my husband and I met for dinner in preparation for going to a funeral home in another town. He asked me, “Do you know where you’re going or do you want to follow me?”

I was sure I knew where I was going but decided to follow him since it was a snowy night. On the way, I realized that since my husband had been the one to talk to the family, I had no idea which funeral home they had chosen. Gratefully, I followed the taillights ahead of me.

After we left the funeral home, I made a decision again to follow my husband even though this time I was sure I knew the way–we were going home! However, just outside our town, there were flares along the road and a flagman who sent us on a detour down a dark, country road. My sense of direction completely deserted me, and I realized again that if I had not chosen to follow, I would have been hopelessly lost.

Through those two incidents, it seemed that God was telling me, “Even when you think you know exactly where you’re going–exactly what my plan is for your life, you need to let me lead.”  A few months later when He completely overturned our carefully made plans to point us in a direction that was totally unexpected, I knew that God had used the experiences of that snowy night to prepare me for what was to come. I’m still not sure where we are going, but I’m staying close behind the One who knows!

Thank you, Holy Spirit, for being our ever-faithful guide.  Amen.
