The Buzzing in Jonnie’s Head

Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the Lord our God (Jeremiah 42:6 NIV).
“But I don’t always want to do what you say!  Sometimes I have a buzzing in my head that says, ‘NO!’” Four-year-old Jonnie was having a hard time dealing with the expectations for obedience in our Christian Nursery School.  His retort reminded me of the times in my life when I have rebelled against God’s instructions.  I don’t always want to do what He says!
The Old Testament shows that I am not alone.  Probably the greatest downfall of the children of Israel was their failure to obey God consistently.  Repeatedly, they chose to go their own way when God’s way did not appeal to them.  Human nature is still the same.
However, old patterns can be broken.  I have found that life becomes simpler when I make up my mind that God’s will is my only option.  With that decision made, by God’s grace I can learn to ignore the buzzing in my head and obey God, “whether it is favorable or unfavorable.”

Dear Lord, forgive us for expecting you to show us your will when we only intend to view it as one of our options.  Amen.
