The Desires of Our Hearts

Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4 NIV).

When our blond, blue-eyed son, Robbie, was about two years old, my mother asked me one day, “Do you remember what you said when you were 15 years old?” Seeing my puzzled expression, she laughed and went on, “You said, Someday I’m going to have a blond, blue-eyed little boy and I’m going to name him Robbie.

I smiled as I remembered the precious fair-haired little Robbie who had prompted that desire in my teenage heart. That desire had been long forgotten when seven years later we named our son Robert Donn after my husband (who goes by his middle name), and called him Robbie. Robbie had also inherited his father’s blue eyes and hair even lighter than his father’s strawberry blond.

But God had not forgotten. I was amazed as I recognized that He had not only known that long-ago desire of my teenage heart, but He had worked out the circumstances of my life to bring it to pass. As I looked at our beautiful little boy, I thanked God for giving me this desire of my heart.

Thank you, Lord, for the miraculous ways that you order our lives so that you can fulfill our heart’s desires. Amen.
