WHEN THE BROOK DRIES UP

Sometime later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land (I Kings 17:7 NIV).
One day as I stood beside an almost-dry brook near our home thinking about the uncertainty of my husband’s job situation, I remembered a Wednesday night meditation I heard years ago about another brook that dried up.
Our assistant pastor had told us, “Even though God sent Elijah to the Brook Cherith promising His provision there, Scripture tells us that sometime later the brook dried up. Sometimes God allows the ‘brooks’ in our lives to dry up so  we will follow Him in a new direction. It is simply one of the ways God guides us.”
As I thought about this meditation, I realized that although God had sent my husband to the University where he was teaching, that didn’t mean He would never allow the “brook” to dry up. But if He did, I knew the Word of the Lord would come to us, even as it came to Elijah, directing us to the next step in God’s plan for our lives.
Father, help me remember that sometimes you change your way of providing for us so we will follow you in a new direction. Amen.
(God did not allow the “brook” to dry up, and Donn continued at Penn State University, Shenango Campus, until he took an early retirement in 2008.)
